NEOCLASSICAL CIVIC LANDMARK

The Asiatic Society Town Hall (“Tondal”)

Designed by Colonel Thomas Cowper of the Bombay Engineers and completed in 1833, the Town Hall anchors the eastern flank of Elphinstone Circle with a 200-foot Neoclassical facade, 30 stone steps, and an eight-column Grecian Doric portico.

🧭 Khaki Ambassador Note

“Colloquially called ‘Tondal’ by 19th-century locals, its construction was funded via a public lottery and supported by Parsi, Hindu, and British philanthropists.”
